Decorative Umbrella “Suzume Odori” (Sparrow Dance)
The Gion Festival brings vibrant color to Kyoto’s summer.
With a history spanning more than a thousand years, it is filled with stories and wishes embodied in each of its festival floats (Yamahoko).
Inspired by the beautiful design and rich history of these floats, Hiyoshiya has created a series of small decorative wagasa (traditional Japanese umbrellas) each of them meticulously handcrafted by Kyoto artisans.

Decorative Umbrella “Suzume Odori” (Sparrow Dance)
This umbrella is inspired by Suzume Odori, one of the dedicated dances performed during the Hanagasa procession, a ceremonial parade of flower-decorated hats, performed by Kyoto geisha and their apprentices of the Gion district.

We incorporated the auspicious bamboo and sparrow motif, often found in kimono design and inspired by the Suzume Odori (the Sparrow dance), to create a world that is both splendid and filled with good fortune.

At the top of the umbrella, the decorative finial suggests a dancer gracefully performing with a hat in the hand.
It echoes the lively atmosphere of Kyoto, where one can almost hear the rhythmic “chun-chun” calls of the Suzume Odori.

These exceptional pieces capture the essence of the Gion Festival, the very symbol of Kyoto’s summer, with the form of a small decorative umbrella.
We invite you to enjoy them as seasonal accents for your home or as a gift to someone special.
