The Tokusen Bangasa is a traditional and timeless umbrella crafted for rainy weather, featuring washi paper and a robust bamboo structure consisting of 48 ribs.
The elegant contrast between the bamboo ribs and the washi accentuates the refined sophistication of Japanese minimalist design.
This umbrella is designed for practical use and suitable for both rainy and sunny days.
To ensure waterproofing, natural linseed oil is applied to the washi paper.
Traditionally, the ‘Bangasa’ has been widely employed in workplaces, schools, inns, and more, featuring various designs including store names, family crests, and inscriptions.
The 'ban' in Bangasa signifies 'standard' and denotes a Japanese umbrella traditionally used for daily purposes.
Numerous depictions of the traditional umbrella are found in Ukiyo-e prints and captured in photographs from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods.
In earlier times, nearly every town had at least one wagasa shop, each crafting its distinct umbrellas. Identifying the shop was possible by observing the unique painting style of the bamboo ribs.
