A traditional masterpiece from Hiyoshiya, favored by grand tea masters
The Honshiki Nodategasa, an authentic outdoor tea ceremony umbrella, favored by grand tea masters, is a traditional masterpiece from Hiyoshiya.
"Nodate," enjoying tea outdoors with nature through the changing seasons, is a style of tea ceremony deeply imbued with the spirit of Japanese culture.
When Queen Elizabeth II made her first visit to Japan in 1975,
a welcome tea ceremony was held at Kyoto's Katsura Imperial Villa, where our Honshiki Nodategasa was used.
In addition to tea ceremonies, the Honshiki Nodategasa is also used at temples, shrines, and various traditional events,
as well as a Japanese interior accent to greet guests at ryokans, wedding venues, high-end restaurants, and exhibitions,
conveying the beauty of Japanese tradition and the spirit of hospitality.
The large "Wabi-cha" umbrella that enhances tea ceremonies
The Honshiki Nodategasa was born when the third generation Isaburo received a special order from Tantansai (Mugensai), the 14th head of the Urasenke school,
to commemorate the enthronement ceremony of the current Emperor Emeritus,
as a custom-made item for a celebratory tea ceremony held in Kyoto in 1952 (Showa 27).
Driven by the desire to "create a nodategasa suitable for Wabi-cha,"
there is a tale of long trial and error to create a nodategasa that perfectly embodied the "wabi-sabi" aesthetic sought by the tea master.
As a result of repeatedly re-dyeing Japanese paper to achieve the color desired by the tea master,
Hiyoshiya's unique and tasteful color scheme was born.
Additionally, the eaves adopted a straight shape called "choku no ha," and the interior featured simple Japanese paper decorations,
resulting in a universal design that largely eliminated elaborate ornamentation.
Made with carefully selected, highest-quality handmade Japanese paper and bamboo,
and crafted with utmost care by skilled artisans, it exudes an elegant and dignified grace.

Plain x 4 sizes, suitable for various uses
Honshiki Nodategasa comes in four sizes based on the length of the main ribs: 2.5 shaku (1,480mm diameter), 3 shaku (1,780mm diameter), 3.5 shaku (2,180mm diameter), and 5 shaku (2,750mm).
The larger the umbrella, the more bamboo ribs are used, with 50 to 70 pairs of main and secondary ribs per umbrella.
The Japanese paper stretched over the bamboo ribs is coated with natural linseed oil,
and then sun-dried to enhance its waterproofing.
It takes even a skilled craftsman 3 to 4 weeks to complete one umbrella.
