A masterpiece favored by tea ceremony grand masters, featuring a dignified appearance that elegantly utilizes white rings.
It brings a sense of Japanese refinement to a variety of settings beyond just tea ceremonies.
A traditional masterpiece favored by tea masters and proudly crafted by Hiyoshiya
The Honshiki (Authentic) Nodategasa, favored by tea ceremony grand masters, is a traditional masterpiece that Hiyoshiya is proud to offer.
"Nodate"—enjoying tea outdoors amidst the nature of the four seasons—is a style of tea ceremony deeply rooted in the spirit of Japanese culture.
When Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom visited Japan for the first time in 1975,
our Honshiki Nodategasa was used at a welcoming tea ceremony held at the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto.
Beyond tea ceremonies, the Honshiki Nodategasa is used at temples, shrines, and various traditional events.
It also serves as an interior element for welcoming guests at ryokans, wedding venues, high-end restaurants, and exhibitions,
conveying Japanese traditional beauty and the spirit of omotenashi (hospitality).
A large "Wabi-cha" umbrella that elevates the tea ceremony
The Honshiki Nodategasa was born during the time of our third-generation owner, Isaburo, when he was commissioned by the 14th Urasenke Grand Master, Tantansai (Mugensai) Soshu,
to create a custom item for a celebratory tea ceremony held in Kyoto in 1952
to commemorate the investiture of the current Emperor Emeritus.
Inspired by the desire to "create a nodategasa worthy of Wabi-cha,"
an anecdote remains of the long trial and error process undertaken to produce a parasol that captured the world of "wabi-sabi" sought by the master.
By repeatedly re-dyeing the washi paper in pursuit of the exact color the master desired,
Hiyoshiya's unique, tasteful hue was born.
The edge features a straight shape called "choku-no-ha," and the interior utilizes simple washi paper decorations,
resulting in a universal design that avoids unnecessary ornamentation.
Using strictly selected, top-quality handmade washi and bamboo,
the final product, crafted with the heart and soul of skilled artisans, exudes elegance and a dignified grace.

Enjoy the beauty of "Danbari" circular patterns
Among the Honshiki Nodategasa, the "Danbari" style features two concentric circles created by joining washi paper of two different colors.
Its dynamic Japanese style looks vivid and stunning outdoors.
"Danbari" is available only in two sizes: 3.5-shaku (diameter 2,180mm) and 5-shaku (2,750mm).
The washi paper stretched over the bamboo frame is coated with natural linseed oil and sun-dried to enhance its water resistance.
It is a monumental work that takes even a master craftsman 3 to 4 weeks to complete a single piece.
