A masterpiece favored by tea ceremony grand masters, with a dignified appearance highlighted by crisp white circles.
Beyond tea gatherings, it brings a refined Japanese elegance to a wide variety of settings.
A traditional masterpiece boasted by Hiyoshiya, favored by tea ceremony grand masters
The Honshiki Nodategasa (authentic outdoor tea ceremony umbrella), favored by tea ceremony grand masters, is a traditional masterpiece that Hiyoshiya takes great pride in.
"Nodate"—the act of enjoying tea outdoors amidst the nature of the changing seasons—is a style of tea ceremony that deeply embodies the spirit of Japanese culture.
When Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom visited Japan for the first time in 1975,
a welcoming tea ceremony was held at the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto, where our Honshiki Nodategasa was used.
In addition to tea ceremonies, the Honshiki Nodategasa is used at temples, shrines, and various traditional events. It also serves as Japanese-style decor for welcoming guests at ryokans, wedding venues, high-end restaurants, and exhibitions, conveying the traditional beauty of Japan and the spirit of hospitality.
The "Wabi-cha" grand umbrella that frames the tea ceremony
The Honshiki Nodategasa was born during the time of our third-generation proprietor, Isaburo, following a request from the 14th-generation head of the Urasenke school, Tantansai (Mugensai),
for a custom-made umbrella for a celebratory tea ceremony held in Kyoto in 1952 (Showa 27)
to commemorate the investiture of the current Emperor Emeritus.
Upon receiving the request to "create a Nodategasa worthy of Wabi-cha,"
anecdotes tell of long-standing trial and error to produce a Nodategasa that matched the world of "wabi-sabi" sought by the master.
Through repeatedly re-dyeing the Japanese paper to pursue the specific color desired by the master,
Hiyoshiya’s unique, tasteful color was born. Furthermore,
it features a straight edge called "choku-no-ha" and simple paper detailing on the inside, resulting in a timeless design that eliminates all excessive ornamentation.
Using carefully selected, top-quality handmade Japanese paper and bamboo,
the final product, crafted with heart and soul by skilled artisans, exudes elegance and dignified grace.

Enjoy the beauty of "Dan-bari," which draws large circles
Among the Honshiki Nodategasa, the "Dan-bari" style features two colors of Japanese paper joined to create two concentric circles.
The dynamic Japanese aesthetic stands out vividly in outdoor settings.
"Dan-bari" is only available in two sizes: 3.5-shaku (2,180mm diameter) and 5-shaku (2,750mm).
The Japanese paper stretched over the bamboo frame is coated with natural linseed oil and sun-dried to enhance its water resistance.
It is a monumental work that takes even a skilled artisan 3 to 4 weeks to complete.
