The Tsumaore Nodategasa, believed to be the foundational piece of Japan's umbrella heritage, was introduced from ancient China alongside the teachings of Buddhism.

Initially utilized by monks and high-ranking nobles, its lineage is evident in antique religious paintings.

Functioning not only as a conventional rain or UV umbrella as we know today, it was regarded as an amulet against malevolent forces.

This talisman-like umbrella is still prominently featured in events like the Kyoto Gion and Aoi Festivals, adorning the processions in stunning red colors.

In contemporary times, Nodate umbrellas play a significant role in tea ceremonies, particularly when conducted outdoors, symbolizing the essence of the tearoom. Its usage extends to traditional events, temples, shrines, as well as in hotels, Japanese restaurants, and tourist spaces.

Due to its beauty and grace, the Tsumaori-nodategasa is frequently incorporated into interior designs.

This traditional umbrella also often makes appearances in movies and dramas as a prominent prop.

The Nodategasa Tsumaore comes in three sizes with intricate designs that are meticulously applied to the neatly folded wagasa.

Using colored cotton thread, detailed patterns are sawn onto the inner part of the wagasa. The surface of the washi paper is treated with a plant-based oil known as flaxseed oil, applied and then dried in the sun for waterproofing.

The bamboo bone structure is uniformly dyed black. Each umbrella consists of main and sub-bones, the quantity of which increases with the size of the wagasa.

For a single Nodategasa, approximately 52 to 70 main bones are used, varying based on its size.

While the typical color is plain red, creating a striking contrast between the red washi and black bamboo bones, we also accommodate special orders tailored to various situations.
