Tobe Ware - Vessels that Accompany You in Your Daily Life
Designated as a traditional national craft in 1976, Tobe ware has flourished since the Edo period. The pottery tradition began with the mining of ‘Iyoto’, a high-quality whetstone, which led to the creation of pottery. At that time, white porcelain was popular worldwide, and Tobe ware, known as "Iyo Bowl," became internationally renowned. As Japan modernized, mass production became the norm in the pottery industry. However, in Tobe, pottery continues to be crafted by hand, one piece at a time. The beautiful porcelain surface, which stands out as light passes through it, the soft hues of the dyeing process using indigo pigment, and the thick, sturdy shapes make Tobe pottery a perfect companion for daily life.
Diligently, by Hand
Sukoshiya is dedicated to preserving the traditional craftsmanship of Tobe pottery, with the hope that their lovingly crafted pieces will be cherished in everyday life. They are committed to creating pottery that is a bit more beautiful, a bit more enjoyable, and a bit more challenging than before. Every day, they strive to improve their craft. The charm of their pottery lies in its gentle and sincere character, reflecting the care and dedication of the artisans.
Crafting Our Unique "Kawaii" and Expanding the Horizons of Tobe Ware
My encounter with Sukoshiya began through the "RE TOBE" project, organized by Ehime Prefecture and the Ehime Prefecture Industrial Technology Research Institute Ceramics Technology Center. The project aimed to introduce modern Tobe ware to a wider audience. Through this project, we explored new Tobe pottery in collaboration with creators and developed the "Minamo Series." The Minamo Series features thick rims that evoke the traditional Tobeware design known as "tama-buchi." We developed a special glaze specifically for the Minamo Series, and after extensive experimentation, we achieved a soft, gray-tinted finish. We also launched a crowdfunding campaign for our new products, successfully reaching 111% of our goal. It was a joyful moment to see our new Tobe ware creations and our vision of "Kawai" (cute) embraced and celebrated.
At Sukoshiya, they are committed to the diligent work with clay. They pursue their own "kawaii" (cute) style, and continue to take on challenges in response to the changing times. While inheriting the tradition of Tobe ware, their gently colored and patterned dishes aim to soothe the hearts of those who use them.
