This is Hiyoshiya of Kyo Wagasa
We are Hiyoshiya, a long-established Kyoto-style Wagasa (Japanese umbrella) manufacturer with over 160 years of history. While preserving the traditional techniques of Kyo Wagasa, crafted from washi paper and bamboo ribs, we have continually created new value under our philosophy that « tradition is continuous innovation. »
Transforming the Beauty and the Craftsmanship of Kyo Wagasa into Lighting
The opening and closing mechanism of umbrellas, which we now take for granted, has a long history of refinement by skilled artisans. Using natural materials such as washi paper, wood, and bamboo, craftmen have long explored ways to achieve smooth opening and closing. After centuries of pursuit, the design we see today was perfected. The elegant shape and structure of Wagasa embody functionality and beauty.
When you open a Wagasa, a gentle light filters through the washi paper and the intricate bamboo rib structure, evoking a sense of awe. However, in modern times, opportunities to experience Wagasa firsthand have become rare. How can we share the beauty and craftsmanship of Kyoto-style Wagasa with a wider audience? Through years of exploration, we arrived at the concept of « Hiyoshiya-KOTORI » lighting.
The Warmth of Washi Paper Lighting, Woven by Light and Shadow
When light filters through washi paper, it diffuses gently throughout the space, creating a soft and calming glow reminiscent of sunlight passing through tree leaves. The geometric patterns formed by the bamboo ribs cast delicate shadows, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that envelops your room with warmth as night falls. With « KOTORI » you can bring a touch of Japan's timeless light into your daily life.
Bringing Artisanal Craftsmanship into Modern Living
Inspired by traditional Kyo Wagasa techniques, « KOTORI » blends seamlessly into both Japanese and Western interiors.
The unique texture of washi paper, combined with precise craftsmanship, results in a sophisticated lighting piece that embodies Japanese elegance.
The Surprise of a Wagasa-Inspired Structure
Using the advanced opening and closing structure of Kyoto-style Wagasa, "KOTORI" allows you to enjoy the surprise of it suddenly unfolding.
Sustainable Craftsmanship
Like the Kyo Wagasa, each "KOTORI" lamp is handcrafted by artisans, requiring minimal energy consumption. The time-intensive craftsmanship prevents excessive production, reducing environmental impact. The lampshade is made from washi paper and bamboo—natural materials that return to the earth—and, just like a wagasa, it can be repaired and cherished for years to come.
Bringing Japanese Traditional Craftsmanship into Daily Life
"KOTORI" is a masterpiece that expresses Japan’s traditional techniques in a way that suits modern lifestyles. Why not introduce a touch of Japanese heritage into your daily living space?
Good Design Award Winner
Traditional crafts have often been perceived as outdated and only used in limited settings. However, by adapting Wagasa techniques and materials into a design that harmonizes with modern lifestyles while retaining a Japanese aesthetic, "KOTORI became a groundbreaking innovation. When exhibited at domestic and international trade shows, it received significant attention as there were no other comparable designs at the time. "KOTORI" has earned numerous accolades, including the prestigious Good Design Award, as well as international recognition.

About Hiyoshiya
Hiyoshiya is a long-established Kyoto-style Wagasa workshop founded in the late Edo period. For over 160 years, we have continued to preserve and pass down the craftsmanship of Kyo Wagasa. Even today, we remain the only workshop dedicated to creating and restoring various types of Wagasa, carrying forward techniques inherited through generations. However, the demand for Wagasa has drastically declined, and Hiyoshiya once faced the brink of closure. In 2004, our current president, Kotaro Nishibori, took over as the fifth-generation head and introduced a new vision: « tradition is continuous innovation. » Under this philosophy, we not only sustain traditional craftsmanship but also develop innovative products such as design lighting inspired by Wagasa techniques. Today, Hiyoshiya has expanded beyond Japan, sharing Kyo Wagasa's beauty and ingenuity with the world.
