"Founded in 1933 near Daigo-ji Temple in the Fushimi district of Kyoto, the Daigo kiln perpetuates the tradition of Raku ceramics, much beloved by the iconic tea master Sen no Rikyu. When the third-generation master unexpectedly passed away, Shizuka Shima became the head of the family in her 20s, assuming the role of the fourth-generation master of the Daigo kiln. She chose to carry on the name Kahei Shima from her predecessors. Partnering with Saki Tanaka, the female duo now jointly manages the kiln and participated in the "Contemporary Kyoto" project in 2020 as a new challenge for their craft. They launched the "RAKUAMI" brand and have since developed new products and designs that continue to capture the allure of Raku Yaki.
