The Craft and Knowledge Behind Better Sleep
At Daitou Shingu Kogyo, every employee is a certified as a Sleep Health Advisor to ensure that each product is developed based on profound knowledge.
Among them is Mr. Kinoshita, a nationally certified bedding craftsman and a key figure in Daitou Shingu Kogyo’s workshop.
From large-scale stitching and cotton filling to selecting the right materials, his work reflects years of experience and a strong intuition. Cotton is carefully packed through a narrow opening in the fabric and the thickness adjusted to suit individual preferences.
This intricate work, which cannot be seen from the outside, is an "invisible technique" that is essential for a good night's sleep.
A Chance Encounter Set in Motion by the KOTORI Lamp
In December 2006, when the Kotori lamp was first released, I visited a photo studio for a magazine shoot and came across Daitou Shingu Kogyo’s single seat sofa tetra.
I still remember the moment I saw it: its refined form caught my eye, and I thought what a comfortable-looking cushion seater. Since then, I have personally used many of Daitou Shingu Kogyo’s products.
All of them are soft to the touch, designed for exceptional comfort and serve as gentle companions in everyday life.
Gentleness for Families and their Babies
As both companies, Daito Shingu Kogyo and Hiyoshiya Craft-Lab, are based in Kyoto, we’ve had the opportunity to work together on numerous projects.
One of the most memorable was the Contemporary Japanese Design Project (CJD-P) in 2016, overseen and produced by Hiyoshiya Craft-Lab.
This project brought together craftspeople from across Japan with designers and producers from overseas.
With the philosophy that tradition is continuous innovation, the goal was to create designs that resonate with modern life-styles.
Daitou Shingu Kogyo, in collaboration with the German design studio Wagner:Design, has refined and developed baby items that utilize artisanal techniques.
Soft to the touch, safe for even the most delicate skin, and designed with playful charm, each piece is crafted with heartfelt care for babies and their families.
New Creations Kyoto Project: A New Challenge to Design Ideal Relaxation
In 2019, as part of the New Creations Kyoto (Atarashiki Mono Kyoto) project, Daitou Shingu Kyogo collaborated with renowned designer Kazushige Miyake to co-develop the single seater tetra Luxe.
With a reference to Japanese lifestyle, this evolved version of Daitou Shingu Kyogo’s signature product, tetra, is a new kind of seat designed for comfort while supporting both sitting and reclining postures.
What makes it especially noteworthy, is its design that naturally maintains an angle of 45 to 60 degrees from the floor, considered the ideal angle for napping.
This concept was brought to life by a team of skilled artisans with advanced certification in sleep health.
